Impact of role play-based program for experiencing disabilities on the attitudes of nondisabled children toward children with disabilities

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate the impact of a role play-based program for experiencing disabilities on the attitudes of nondisabled children toward children with disabilities. The subjects were 16 nondisabled children(9 boys and 7 girls). The average age of the subjects was 4.6 years old. The research design was a single group pre- and post- design. The 16-session role play-based program was implemented for eight weeks. The program included various activities for experiencing visual disabilities, auditory disabilities, developmental disabilities, and physical disabilities. The results of the study were as follows: (a) The role play-based program influenced the attitudes of nondisabled children toward children with disabilities positively. (b) There was no difference between the boys¡¯ group and the girls¡¯ group in the attitudinal changes. (c) Nondisabled children perceived that the role play-based program was effective for changing their attitudes. The recommendations for future studies suggested on the basis of the research findings are as follows: (a) It should be figured out that effective components of the program package. (b) Various systematic strategies and programs should be developed for changing nondisabled children¡¯s attitudes toward children with disabilities.
